In a significant political development, President-elect of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has officially mandated the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament to nominate Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The announcement, made on Sunday, January 5, 2025, follows consultations with the National Executive and Parliamentary leadership of the NDC. Rt. Hon. Bagbin, a distinguished statesman, has previously served as Speaker of the 8th Parliament and has held key leadership roles, including Minority and Majority Leader, during his tenure as a Member of Parliament for Nadwoli-Kaleo.

In a statement released by the President-elect’s office, signed by Special Aide Felix Kwakye Ofosu, H.E. Mahama highlighted Bagbin’s vast experience and exceptional service, which he believes will be instrumental in guiding Ghana’s Parliament through critical moments in the country’s democratic and legislative journey.

The President-elect expressed confidence that Bagbin’s stewardship would further enhance the effectiveness of Parliament’s oversight responsibilities, ensuring its role as a cornerstone of Ghana’s democratic governance.

Bagbin, one of Ghana’s most seasoned politicians, is known for his commitment to fostering inclusivity and his dedication to legislative excellence. His re-nomination is seen as a move to solidify stability and efficiency in Parliament, especially as the country navigates key challenges.

The nomination reflects the NDC’s intention to strengthen parliamentary democracy while positioning experienced leadership to address national priorities.

This decision underscores President-elect Mahama’s vision of unity, progress, and continuity as he prepares to lead the nation once again.
