Builsa North Member of Parliament James Agalga has been selected as the new Majority Leader in Parliament following the nomination of Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs-designate.

The change marks a significant adjustment to the leadership structure of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus.

Mahama Ayariga, who has been leading the Majority side in Parliament, is set to leave the leadership position following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama to serve in the executive arm of government.

His nomination has consequently paved the way for James Agalga to assume responsibility for leading the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

Mr Agalga, the MP for Builsa North in the Upper East Region, is an experienced legislator and a prominent member of the NDC. His elevation is expected to bring continuity to the Majority Caucus while ensuring effective coordination of government business on the floor of Parliament.

As Majority Leader, he will play a central role in organising and coordinating the activities of the Majority Caucus, including the scheduling and passage of government legislation and other parliamentary business.

He will also be expected to work closely with the Speaker of Parliament and the Minority leadership to facilitate the smooth conduct of parliamentary proceedings.

Meanwhile, Mahama Ayariga’s transition from Parliament to the executive follows President Mahama’s decision to nominate him to oversee the Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs portfolio.

The ministry is a strategically important institution with responsibility for local governance, decentralisation, chieftaincy matters and aspects of Ghana’s religious affairs.

Mr Ayariga is expected to bring his parliamentary and governance experience to the ministry if his nomination is approved through the requisite parliamentary processes.

The latest leadership change comes as the Mahama administration continues to reposition key officials to advance its policy agenda and strengthen coordination between the executive and legislature.

James Agalga’s appointment is therefore expected to usher in a new phase for the NDC Majority Caucus as Parliament prepares to tackle a number of legislative and national policy priorities.
