At a town hall meeting on Monday, August 12, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized the importance of accountability for public office holders.
He stated that those in positions of government are there to serve the nation and must be ready to answer for their actions.
Mahama further asserted that any public officeholder who abuses their position should expect to be held accountable.
He was very clear in saying that instead of running for public office, anyone looking to further their own wealth should look to the private sector.
“If people want to come into government and make money then we can’t help you, go into the private centre, we will help you set up a cassava processing plant go and process cassava, employ young people, don’t and come and take public office.
“Once you take public office you must be prepared to be held to account,” he said.
While acknowledging the difficulties of bringing charges against members of his own party or administration, the former president emphasized how important it is to do so in order to maintain accountability and fight corruption.
