IGP declares war on galamsey, orders nationwide crackdown

A national campaign to stop illegal mining, or galamsey, has been announced by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

On Friday, March 21, 2025, IGP Yohuno spoke at the Regional Command Conference held at the Police Headquarters. He emphasized the serious security threats that illegal mining poses, especially in mining villages and forest reserves.

He said the situation has gotten worse in areas like the Western North, where attackers with weapons have attacked forest guards and innocent citizens.

“Illegal mining poses a security risk, particularly in our forest reserves and mining communities. In regions like the Western North and many others, armed criminals have carried out brutal attacks on innocent people, including forest guards without justification.

“This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue. We are declaring war on crimes related to illegal mining and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice,” he stated.
