After accusations made at a press conference on March 24, 2025, former National Signals Bureau Chief Kwabena Adu-Boahen and his spouse have sued Attorney General Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine for defamation.
Dr. Ayine accused the pair of financially mistreating each other and committing several other crimes during the press conference. In their view, the allegations were unfounded, harmful, and devoid of any factual or legal support.
The Adu-Boahens say these remarks have damaged their reputation and were made without proof, which is why they are suing.
The Adu-Boahens are requesting in their writ the following remedies from the court: a permanent injunction prohibiting Dr. Ayine from making any more statements of this nature; exemplary and punitive damages for the publication and/or broadcast of the defamatory remarks made during the press conference on March 24; and the expenses of the lawsuit, including legal fees.
Dr. Ayine has eight days from the date of service to reply to the suit, according court regulations. If he doesn’t, the plaintiffs may receive a default judgment from the court.
On Thursday, March 20, 2025, Kwabena Adu-Boahen was taken into custody by Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) authorities in relation to a purported financial scandal involving a $7 million contract for a cyber security system.
With two sureties, one of whom must provide justification, the Accra High Court lowered the former Signals Bureau Director’s bail requirements from GH¢120 million to GH¢80 million on Friday, March 28, 2025.
Adu-Boahen and his wife’s passports must stay with EOCO, the court further mandated, and any travel must have the agency’s specific consent.
