Gov’t, MultiChoice form joint committee to slash DStv subscription fees

A joint committee with MultiChoice Ghana has been established to investigate whether to lower DStv subscription costs, according to Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations Sam Nartey George.

Following regulators’ demand for a 30% reduction in subscription fees, the ministry and the pay-TV provider were at odds for weeks before the development.

The Ministry threatened to suspend MultiChoice’s license if prices were not lowered by September 6, 2025, and earlier this month fined the business GH¢10,000 per day for not submitting the necessary pricing data required by the Electronic Communications Act (ECA).

Speaking during a news conference on Friday, September 5, 2025, in Accra, Mr. George affirmed that the committee was established at the company’s request and included the ministry, MultiChoice Ghana, MultiChoice Africa, and the National Communications Authority (NCA).

“Let us be clear—they have finally accepted that there will be a reduction, and they want us to discuss the level of reduction,” the minister said. He added that the government had rejected MultiChoice’s request for 30 days to deliberate, noting, “Fourteen days is enough, inclusive of weekends, for us to reach this decision.”

The committee, chaired by the minister, is expected to present a price reduction strategy later this month.
