A significant renewable energy project has been launched by Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, with the goal of providing clean energy to thousands of Ghanaians, especially those living in isolated and island areas.
The Ghana Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme, or STRIP, was formally started by the government on May 30, 2025, the minister disclosed during a report on the energy sector’s performance on Wednesday, July 16.
“The ministry has launched the Ghana Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme, known as STRIP, and we did it on 30th May 2025. This project is funded with an 85 million grant from the African Development Bank, Climate Investment Fund, SECO, and the Government of Ghana,” Jinapor stated.
He clarified that the STRIP initiative will target underprivileged communities nationwide with a broad rollout of solar-powered infrastructure.
“The project aims to deploy 12,000 NEC meters solar PV systems across homes, construct 35 mini grids to supply electricity to 70,000 people and 47 island communities, and ensure that we supply 1,450 solar home systems for off-grid households and public facilities,” he outlined.
The $85 million project is a component of the government’s larger plan to lessen Ghana’s reliance on fossil fuels and move the country toward cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. The project also aims to alleviate historical energy inequity and promote inclusive development by focusing on rural and island areas.
