As part of the government’s attempts to bring stability and financial stability back to the nation’s power sector, the Ministry of Energy has confirmed that the GH₵1 fuel levy will go into force on Monday, July 14.
“We will start on Monday, July 14,” the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, confirmed when asked about the commencement date on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday.
He claimed that the industry was left to the current administration with enormous debt and fundamental inefficiencies. He emphasized that the levy is an essential corrective action meant to maintain electricity generation and guarantee long-term energy security.
“This government inherited a very difficult energy sector—and it’s not just the power sector—the petroleum sector as well, both downstream and upstream. It will take all of us as citizens to sacrifice in order to bring the sector back,” he said.
A lot of Ghanaians, particularly those from opposition political parties, expressed worry about the rising cost of living when the GH₵1 fuel fee was announced months ago.
The Ghana Revenue Authority has been given permission to collect the fee by the Energy Ministry, which maintains that it is required to revitalize the industry.
