The Electoral Commission’s (EC) delay in revealing the outcomes of Saturday’s general elections has drawn criticism from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The party claims that tensions are rising and that some areas of the nation are experiencing pockets of violence as a result of the delay in announcing the results. On Sunday, December 8, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the NDC, addressed the media from the party’s headquarters and urged the EC to release the results as soon as possible in order to prevent further escalation.
His plea was made in the midst of mounting dissatisfaction among NDC supporters, particularly young people, who are calling for transparency and clarity in the election process.
Asiedu Nketia, also referred to as “General Mosquito,” emphasized in his speech that the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had finished their separate results compilations.
He asked why the EC had not yet carried out its mission as the official body tasked with monitoring and announcing the results.
Asiedu Nketia emphasized that the protracted delay is causing a hazardous void that allows for public unrest, disinformation, and fear.
“The two key players [NPP and NDC] have produced our results, yet the EC is dragging its feet to announce the results. We made known in our previous update that the only way to ensure peace was for the EC to announce the results, but we are still waiting and our agents are still waiting across the country, and because of the delay, the youth of this country have started reacting, and that is a dangerous sign.”
