The Government of Ghana has officially confirmed the heartbreaking death of eight Ghanaian nationals after a terrorist strike in Titao, northern Burkina Faso.
In a statement dated February 17, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that seven members of the Ghana National Tomatoes Traders and Transporters Association, who were engaged in legitimate commercial activities, were initially killed in the February 14 jihadist attack. An eighth victim, who had been receiving critical medical care, has also sadly passed on.
President John Dramani Mahama has extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and strongly denounced the incident, branding it a “mindless act of terror.”
The President further reaffirmed Ghana’s solidarity with the Government and people of Burkina Faso, stressing the imperative for intensified and coordinated regional action to confront the persistent threat of violent extremism in the sub-region.
Pursuant to the President’s directive, the Ghana Air Force has carried out an air medical evacuation of the injured Ghanaian victims, who are expected to arrive in the country later today.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rolled out revised travel guidance for Ghanaians planning visits to high-risk destinations within the sub-region. Persons whose travel is deemed essential have been strongly urged to first consult the Ministry or Ghana’s diplomatic missions for appropriate guidance.
Ghanaians currently residing in areas where extremist incidents have been reported are being advised to minimize movement, maintain steady contact with the Embassy of Ghana in Burkina Faso, and keep valid identification documents readily available to facilitate emergency consular assistance if required.
Officials also indicate that Ghana’s embassies and high commissions in selected jurisdictions have been placed on heightened consular alert as authorities continue to closely monitor the situation.
Citizens in need of urgent assistance are encouraged to reach out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs via its designated emergency hotlines and official email channels. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
