According to Ghana Gas’s management, one of the main causes of the company’s increasing operating expenses is overstaffing; as of 2024, there were more than 1,200 employees, up from just over 250 in 2016.
When Judith Blay, the CEO, appeared before the Energy Committee of Parliament on Friday, June 20, she voiced the issue.
“At Ghana Gas, we are about 1,290 in number. This is the staff strength. I needed to establish that because I know that honourable members are interested in employment, so I needed to say this phrase that Ghana Gas is seriously overstaffed,” she told the Committee.
The company’s financial resources have been severely taxed by the increase in staff, she said. “We were 250 at the time in 2016, and as of right now, Ghana Gas has over 1,200 employees,” she stated.
She underlined that the company’s primary duties are to maintain the gas processing facility and guarantee a consistent supply of gas for power production, and that hiring more people than is necessary to meet these demands increases costs.
“Maintaining the facility and making sure we have gas to power is Ghana Gas’ primary responsibility. That’s why it’s one of Ghana Gas’s cost drivers,” she clarified.
She emphasized that efficiency requires refining internal procedures while showcasing Ghana Gas’s significant corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
“Now, you are undoubtedly aware that Ghana Gas has engaged in a great deal of corporate social responsibility,” she said.
