The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with the fatal violence that characterized the Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko on Sunday.
Among the three suspects is former Member of Parliament for Sunyani West Constituency and Employment and Labour Relations Minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah.
The former minister of state is the Chief Executive Officer of Nsoatreman FC.
He was arrested together with Agyemang Duah Owusu and Kyeremeh Joseph.
“All three suspects are currently in police custody assisting in the investigations,” a statement from the Service said.
According to the police, a search conducted in the room of one of the suspects, Duah Owusu, led to the retrieval of two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP 23 pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition.
Sunday’s violence led to the stabbing to death of staunch Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley.
He was stabbed by an unknown person immediately near the Prof Amoah Koramansah II Park after the 1-0 win by Nsoatreman.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, is said to have visited the bereaved family, assuring them of a thorough investigation into the incident.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has since banned Nsoatreman FC from playing at home.
