Family Demands Justice After Tragic Electrocution of Kikam Technical Student

The family of 17-year-old Bernard Nyanzu, a final-year student at Kikam Technical Institute in the Western Region, is engulfed in sorrow and confusion following his tragic death from electrocution. His father, Joseph Nyanzu Blay, suspects foul play and has expressed frustration over the lack of clear information regarding the circumstances surrounding his son’s demise.

In an interview with Accra-based Angel FM, Mr. Blay recounted the harrowing moment he received the news of Bernard’s death on January 25, 2026. He was at home when representatives from the school arrived to break the devastating news. His wife had seen their son during a PTA meeting just days before, making the sudden loss even more shocking.

According to Mr. Blay, he was informed that the school had sent some students, including Bernard, to undertake paid work when the incident occurred. He noted that this was a common practice at the institution, raising questions about safety protocols during such activities.

The grieving father has struggled to gather consistent information from school officials and investigators, as conflicting accounts have emerged. “I am yet to come to terms with the incident and nobody has been forthcoming with information,” he lamented, highlighting the lack of communication from both the school and medical personnel involved.

Despite his attempts to seek answers, Mr. Blay revealed that no official representatives from the school have reached out to the family since Bernard’s passing. Instead, only a few community members visited to offer condolences, leaving him feeling isolated and unheard in his time of grief.

Adding to the confusion, Mr. Blay stated that the headmaster initially denied that Bernard had been present at school after it reopened. This contradicted accounts from other students and teachers who confirmed they had seen Bernard shortly before the tragedy occurred.

The father expressed his frustration over being unable to speak with the second student involved in the incident, as he has been told that the student has been transferred for medical treatment. “I have been trying to speak with him, but they keep telling me he has been referred,” he said.

As investigations continue, Mr. Blay revealed that police officers informed him that the case has been escalated to the regional command, limiting what they can disclose publicly. Meanwhile, he learned that the individual responsible for overseeing the students during their work has already been granted bail. The family is now demanding a thorough and transparent investigation into Bernard Nyanzu’s death, vowing to seek justice if necessary.
