Kundum festival is celebrated by the Nzemas and Ahantas of the South Western Ghana. It is celebrated every year in September and October.
Kundum is the traditional festival of ancestral veneration and prosperity in life and builds on intangible cultural practices like music, dance, drama, and oral narratives.
It was introduced in the year 1515 under the authority of King Anor Blay I of the great Nzema Kingdom from Aboade (Ahantaland).
Since its initiation in the year 1515 till date, it has been celebrated across the globe. It is celebrated in Ghana, Ivory Coast and many parts of the world.
King Anor Blay I was the 5th King of the Nvavile (Agona) clan who ruled the territories of Nzema from 1500 to 1550 before his Great Grand Nephew, King Kaku Aka I.
The Nzema Kundum serves as one of the greatest testaments of the Kaku Aka Hegemony, 1831 to 1851, the only Stool that serves as King and Overlord of Nzemaland from Ghana to Ivory Coast.
