Ex-Asante Kotoko and Karela United star Umar Basiru signs for Ghaz Al-Shamal SC

Ghanaian midfielder Umar Basiru has completed a move to Iraqi side Ghaz Al-Shamal SC ahead of the 2026/2027 football season, adding another exciting chapter to his remarkable football journey.

The experienced midfielder joins the Iraqi outfit after building an impressive career across Ghana, Ethiopia and Iraq, representing several clubs and gaining valuable experience in different competitive environments.

Basiru started his professional career with West African Football Academy (WAFA), where he featured between 2015 and 2018. His performances at the renowned academy-based club showcased his midfield qualities and earned him a move to Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.

At Asante Kotoko, Basiru competed at the highest level of Ghanaian football during the 2018/2019 season, gaining exposure with one of the country’s most successful clubs.

The midfielder later joined Karela United FC in 2020, where he became an important figure for the Aiyinase-based Ghana Premier League side. His consistency, tactical discipline and ability to dictate play made him a dependable presence in the middle of the park.

Basiru’s career later took him beyond Ghana as he embraced new challenges in Ethiopia. He featured for Medhin during the 2022/2023 season before moving to Nigd Bank for the 2023/2024 campaign, further broadening his international experience.

The Ghanaian midfielder continued his overseas adventure in Iraq, joining Al Mosul SC for the 2025/2026 season before securing his latest move to Ghaz Al-Shamal SC ahead of the 2026/2027 campaign.

Having represented clubs including West African Football Academy (WAFA), Asante Kotoko, Karela United FC, Medhin, Nigd Bank and Al Mosul SC, Basiru brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of different football cultures to his new club.

The 29-year-old has also enjoyed recognition at the national level, representing Ghana’s Black Meteors (U-23) and the Black Galaxies, Ghana’s home-based senior national team.

Renowned for his composure, ball distribution, work rate and tactical awareness, Basiru is expected to add stability and experience to Ghaz Al-Shamal SC’s midfield as they prepare for the new season.

His move continues the growing trend of Ghanaian footballers making their mark abroad, with Basiru determined to leave a lasting impression in Iraqi football.
