The Agona Swedru District Magistrate Court has granted an injunction against Cynthia Mamle Morrison’s candidacy, so her eligibility to run for office in Agona West as an independent parliamentary candidate is currently in uncertainty.
The Agona West Constituency Member of Parliament nomination process is controlled by the court, and Cynthia Morrison is not allowed to participate in any way.
The general elections in 2024 are quickly approaching, therefore her political future in the constituency is extremely questionable given the timing of the decision.
After successfully running for and winning the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seat in 2016 and 2020, she decided to run as an independent in 2024 after losing the primary.
Morrison felt she was not given a fair shot in the party’s internal contest, that is why she decided to run independently.
She claimed that partiality and a lack of openness hampered the procedures that led to the NPP choosing a parliamentary candidate, which is why she decided to take matters into her own hands.
Although she has a history of accomplishment and has contributed to the party’s past electoral successes, she has been outspoken in her criticism of the party leadership, claiming that they have marginalised her.
Christopher Arthur received 240 votes in the NPP primary on April 13, while the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection received 152 votes.
Below is the injunction.
