Education Minister Mandates Use of Mother Tongue in All Ghanaian Schools

Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has issued a directive to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure the mandatory use of mother tongue instruction across all schools in the country.

The Minister explained that the decision is a key component of the government’s broader education reform agenda, aimed at strengthening the teaching and learning process through the promotion of local languages.

Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons Living with Disabilities, Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that using indigenous languages as the medium of instruction, especially at the basic level would significantly improve comprehension and learning outcomes among pupils.

“I am directing the Director-General of the GES and the entire Service that, from today, the use of mother tongue instruction is compulsory in all Ghanaian schools,” he stated.

Mr. Iddrisu added that the GES must ensure strict compliance with the new policy, which he described as an essential part of President Mahama’s “Reset Agenda” for the education sector.
