Vice president Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has been urged by President John Dramani Mahama to gradually return to her responsibilities.
On Thursday, May 22, Mahama welcomed her back to Accra and relayed the words of medical experts who had evaluated her condition: “The doctors say you are 20 years younger.” The professor told me that you are suitable for the position and that you are doing well.
Although Mahama acknowledged the good health report, he cautioned the Vice President to proceed cautiously before taking up her full responsibilities again.
“We will ask that you take it easy for a little while, and after that, we will see how things go,” he added.
The return of Vice President Opoku-Agyemang comes after a longer medical absence than the three weeks the government had originally said. During this time, following initial consultations at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), she moved overseas for more treatment.
With the President and Vice President both away at the same time, her absence has sparked questions about the continuity of governance.
Following confirmation of her recovery, Opoku-Agyemang will progressively return to her formal responsibilities, which will revitalize government operations.
