Dec. 7 revocation: No nurse has been affected – GRNMA Assistant PRO

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association’s (GRNMA) assistant public relations officer reports that the Chief of Staff’s order, which revoked all appointments made in the public sector after December 7, 2024, has not impacted any nurses.

Nurses were first upset by the decision, according to Philemon Agyapong. However, the situation has since calmed down after Kwabena Mintah Akandah, the Health Minister, addressed the matter.

On Monday, February 24, 2025, he informed viewers on JoyNews’ PM Express that no nurse’s appointment had been canceled.

He added that in response to the Chief of Staff’s order, the Association contacted the Health Minister, who made it clear that nurses who followed the proper procedures and received financial clearance would not be impacted.

“No nurse has gone home as we speak,” Mr Agyapong stated.

His comments follow the GRNMA’s request that the government not include newly recruited nurses in the order.

They threatened to launch a series of industrial measures in support of the impacted nurses if any of its members were impacted.

As a vital component of Ghana’s healthcare workforce, newly recruited nurses and midwives must stay on the job, underlined GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo.

Mr. Agyapong went on to say that 15,200 nurses had been authorized for posting in the health sector, and that nurses and midwives had already obtained financial clearance in June 2024.

He argued that it would be inappropriate to annul their appointments.

“What I’m aware is that the former administration gave financial clearance to 15,200 nurses and we are expecting 15,200 nurses to be posted within that period – that is spanning from August 2024 to December 31, 2024,” he said.

He reaffirmed that the posted nurses are already at work and should not be sent home.
