The High Court has convicted the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for unlawfully assigning mineral rights without the requisite approval and deliberately facilitating illegal mining activities at his mining concession in Samreboi.

The conviction marks a significant development in Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, and highlights the judiciary’s commitment to enforcing the country’s mining and environmental laws.

According to the court’s findings, Chairman Wontumi transferred mineral rights without obtaining the mandatory approval from the appropriate regulatory authorities, an act that contravenes the Minerals and Mining Act. The court further held that he knowingly facilitated illegal mining operations within his concession, resulting in his conviction.

The case has attracted widespread public attention due to Chairman Wontumi’s influential position within the NPP and the growing national concern over the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities.
