Court Clears Path for Daddy Lumba’s Funeral Tomorrow

The funeral of Ghanaian music legend Daddy Lumba is now set to proceed on Saturday, December 13, after the parties challenging the burial failed to raise the GH₵2 million required by the Accra High Court.

Under the court’s ruling, missing the payment deadline automatically authorises Transitions Funeral Home to release the body for burial. Lawyers for the funeral home have indicated they are only awaiting the certified order to activate the final arrangements.

This decision follows a previous injunction that temporarily halted the funeral and prevented the release of the body. Lawyers for the applicants argued that the new directive was “practically impossible,” insisting the court could not alter its initial order without proper notice. They suggested signing an undertaking to pay the amount later and cautioned that the sudden shift could create public confusion.

The respondents countered that GH₵2 million was inadequate considering the significant costs already incurred on dignitaries, contractors and overall preparations. They pushed for the sum to be raised above GH₵5 million and maintained that the burial should go on if the maternal family failed to meet the financial requirement.

The High Court clarified that the directive does not involve the Daddy Lumba LBG Foundation or the second respondent. However, it emphasised that once the payment is not made, Transitions Funeral Home must release the body, clearing the way for the funeral while financial issues are sorted out.

With the deadline missed, preparations are expected to move into full gear ahead of tomorrow’s ceremony, marking a decisive moment in the long-running dispute over the legendary musician’s burial.
