The government’s order to freeze their salaries for July has prompted the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to discontinue all of its services.
The Controller and Accountant General’s Department was directed by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) on July 22 to suspend the wages of all striking CETAG members for July 2024, with the exception of the Principals.
In response to this instruction, CETAG said in a statement on Tuesday, July 23, that it is discontinuing all of its offerings in accordance with the Minister of Education’s direction.
“In an emergency meeting of National Council, July 23, the council members took a unanimous decision to withdraw all our services including attendance to meetings, congregation ceremonies and provision of academic counselling services as well as supervision of students in the halls of residence with immediate effect until further notice,” part of the statement read.
The group stated that it had forwarded the unlawful order to freeze their salaries for July to its solicitors, who will take the appropriate measures.
Assuring the striking CETAG members that their issues are being taken seriously, GTEC has urged them to return to the classroom.
