In an attempt to determine their next course of action in relation to their ongoing strike, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) called off a meeting with the Education Ministry on Friday, July 26.
CETAG claims that a letter from the Finance Ministry intended to finalize an agreement with them was missing a signature.
Speaking to JoyNews, CETAG’s National Communications Officer Fedilis Kamaayi said “We were expecting an agreement that should have been signed by the Ministry, key stakeholders so that based on that document we could have a discussion but we have not received the document from the ministry.”
Since June 14, CETAG has been on strike in protest of poorer working conditions and the enforcement of arbitral rulings rendered by the National Labor Commission.
In accordance with a GTEC decision, the government frozen teachers’ salaries with the intention of forcing them back into the classroom.
But the teachers aren’t going to back down because of this; they even say they can forgo another two months of pay if necessary to acquire what’s rightfully theirs.
Mr. Kamaayi acknowledged that the students were negatively affected, but he insisted that this was the best way to hold them accountable for their rights.
Emefa Apawu of Joy FM was informed by a communication team member that the employers will decide how to end the strike.
“If the demands, whatever we are asking and they call us, let’s say today and ‘tell us that on Monday your account will be credited, that is all. We call it off,” he added.
