In a recent interview, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), discussed the difficult times of Kwame Nkrumah’s administration and discussed Ghana’s complicated political history.
NAPO explained how Nkrumah’s activities sparked the emergence of several parties, which in turn led to the establishment of the NPP.
He claimed that the persecution of traditional leaders under Nkrumah’s rule resulted in the exile of numerous chiefs. Various political groupings finally came to be as a result of this and came together to become the NPP.
He also shed light on a little-known fact during Nkrumah’s presidency: the capital of the Volta Region was moved from Hohoe to Ho. According to NAPO, this choice was representative of Nkrumah’s larger initiatives to establish authority and control over the nation.
Prempeh sought to highlight the NPP’s dedication to maintaining democratic principles and fostering national unity by providing these historical insights and placing the party in context.
