A motion calling for the resignation of four Members of Parliament (MPs) has been approved by Speaker of the House of Representatives Alban Bagbin.
Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu submitted the motion, arguing that the MPs must resign their parliamentary positions in accordance with the constitutional requirements governing parliamentary membership. The MPs intend to run as independent candidates in the December elections.
Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kojo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central) are the MPs impacted by this decision.
The motion highlights the interpretation that by announcing their intent to run as independents, these MPs have effectively forfeited their party affiliations, thus vacating their seats in Parliament.
This decision highlights the continuous conflicts in Ghanaian politics, particularly as the elections get near. The MPs in question as well as the electoral climate in their districts may be significantly impacted by the ruling.
