The New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, was taken into custody by a squad of armed men during a dawn raid. Operatives thought to be from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) retrieved the former NPP parliamentary candidate for Adentan from his family home.
While some of the agents were dressed plainly, others were said to have been masked and carrying AK-47 guns. Over 20 CID personnel were there to take Mr. Kumi away, according to a Facebook post made early by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who urged party members to rush to his home.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the MP for Manhyia South, then verified the incident, claiming to have received a panicked call from Adenta Kumi.
Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah verified the detention as well, calling it a concerning “Rambo-style” raid. The reason for the arrest is still unknown.
However, Kumi petitioned President John Mahama to dissolve the committee looking into Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s potential removal, and the arrest was made just days after.
Adenta Kumi had claimed to have seen three justices of the Supreme Court, including two committee members, dining together in an Accra restaurant on May 15, 2025.
He asserted that he has proof to back up his assertions and that the justices were debating issues pertaining to the ongoing petition in an interview with Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM.
He identified them as Justice Yonny Kulendi, Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, and Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, the committee’s chairman.
