Abdul Karim Zito has officially resigned from his role as head coach of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, bringing his tenure to an abrupt end with immediate effect.
The club confirmed the development via its official communication channels, announcing that Zito Kabutey had stepped aside from his position. Management, in its statement, acknowledged his decision, expressed gratitude for his services to the club, and wished him well in his future endeavours. The statement further assured supporters that details regarding the club’s new technical direction will be communicated in due course.
Zito’s resignation follows days of heightened speculation surrounding his future, which intensified after the Porcupine Warriors’ painful exit from the MTN FA Cup last weekend. Earlier on Monday, Kotoko’s hierarchy had indicated that no definitive decision had yet been taken, while conceding their dissatisfaction with the team’s recent performances.
By choosing to resign, Zito effectively forestalled a potential dismissal. Under the terms of his contract, a termination by the club would have required a one-month notice or the payment of a GHS 120,000 compensation package.
His departure caps a difficult and inconsistent campaign for Asante Kotoko, a period marked by unfulfilled expectations and mounting pressure from the club’s passionate fanbase.
Attention now turns to the task ahead for Kotoko’s management, as they begin the search for a new technical leader capable of restoring stability, confidence, and competitive edge to one of Ghana’s most storied and demanding football institutions.
