Bonzoh Kay wins appeal as NPP clears him for Western Regional Secretary race

Former Ellembelle District Chief Executive, Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh, has won his appeal against his disqualification after the National Steering Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially cleared him to contest the party’s Western Regional Secretary position.

The decision brings to an end days of uncertainty surrounding Hon. Bonzoh’s candidature and paves the way for him to participate in the upcoming Western Regional Executive Committee elections.

The ruling was contained in a directive dated August 3, 2026, signed by the Acting National Chairman of the NPP, Danquah Buttey Smith, following the committee’s consideration of a petition filed by Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh under Regulation 9 of the party’s Rules and Regulations for the Conduct of the Regional Executive Committee Elections.

According to the directive, the National Steering Committee resolved that Hon. Bonzoh be reinstated after deliberating on the issues raised in the petition.

“Following its deliberations, the National Steering Committee resolved that Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh be cleared to contest the Western Regional Executive Elections. Accordingly, he is hereby officially cleared to participate as a candidate in the elections,” the statement read.

The committee further directed the Western Regional Steering Committee and all relevant election officials to immediately implement the decision and ensure full compliance.

Mr. Bonzoh’s clearance overturns an earlier decision by the Western Regional Vetting Committee, which had disqualified him following a petition challenging his eligibility to contest the Regional Secretary position.

Although the details of the petition were not officially disclosed, the challenge was widely reported to have centred on allegations regarding his educational qualifications, with claims that he did not possess the required academic certificate for the position.

The decision to disqualify the former Ellembelle DCE generated widespread debate within the NPP, particularly in the Western Region, where several party members described the petition as politically motivated and urged the national leadership to review the matter.

Throughout the process, Mr. Bonzoh maintained that he met all constitutional and electoral requirements and expressed confidence that the party’s internal mechanisms would deliver a fair outcome.

His reinstatement has been welcomed by supporters across the Western Region, especially in the Ellembelle Constituency, where news of the National Steering Committee’s decision sparked jubilant celebrations.

Supporters took to social media and various party platforms to hail the decision as a victory for justice, fairness and due process, while commending the party’s national leadership for upholding the principles of internal democracy.

With his appeal successful, Mr. Bonzoh now rejoins the race for the Western Regional Secretary position, where he is expected to challenge incumbent Okatakyie Amankwaa Afrifa in what is anticipated to be one of the most closely contested elections within the party’s regional executive polls.
