Bishop Salifu Amoako re-arrested after AG dropped initial charges

The court in the East Legon disaster case has discharged Bishop Salifu Amoako, a well-known clergyman, the mother of their son Mouha Amoako, and one other person after the Attorney General abruptly dropped charges against them.

But they were arrested again under new legal circumstances not long after they left the courtroom.

The state decided to withdraw the accusations against Amoako, his wife, and the third accused on Monday, February 17, 2025, and notified the court of this decision.

The goal of the measure is to give the police more time to carry out more investigations and decide on the best course of action.

The judge formally dismissed the charges after receiving a request from the state.

Background

Bishop Elijah Salifu Amoako, his wife Mouha Amoako, and sales assistant Linda Bonsu Bempah were taken into custody after their 16-year-old son tragically caused a fatal accident in East Legon on October 12, 2024.

When the minor struck an Acura utility vehicle while operating a white Jaguar F-Pace Sport without a valid license, the event happened. The Acura caught fire as a result of the impact, killing two young children.

In December 2024, the juvenile entered a guilty plea to manslaughter and was given a six-month sentence at the Senior Correctional Center.

He first pleaded not guilty to counts of homicide, recklessly inflicting injury, reckless driving, and driving without a license, but he later changed his mind.

As part of his sentencing, the court mandated that he sign an agreement to not drive until he becomes 18 and report to probation authorities every two weeks.

A different verdict fined the teen’s parents 500 penalty units apiece, or GH₵6,000, for not keeping a close enough eye on their kid.

They were also directed to pay for additional accident-related damages, such as a GH₵8,000 light pole.
