According to Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Bawumia never endorsed the contentious Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy).
His explanation comes after Dr. Bawumia recently stated that the NPP’s loss in the general elections of 2024 was mostly due to the E-Levy, the controversial haircut policy, the high cost of living, the haughtiness of authority, and the refusal to reshuffle government officials.
Dr. Bawumia has continuously resisted taxing digital transactions, Miracles Aboagye stated in an interview with Charles Owusu-Kumi on Channel One Newsroom.
“If you have a leader who is able to admit such shortfalls, then that is a leader you can trust. Once you acknowledge your challenges, you’re like 50% solving them…Dr Bawumia acknowledged the high cost of living and made certain proposals to deal with that.
“He has always had issues with E-levy. He’s on public record, indicating that he doesn’t think that we should under any circumstances place any form of taxes or levies on digital transactions,” he stated.
According to Aboagye, Dr. Bawumia’s sincerity on the party’s shortcomings is a positive step toward the NPP’s reconstruction.
“If he’s outlining these things, coming out for some of the reasons for our loss, I think it’s a way to go. It’s a better way to rebuild as an organisation than to gloss over them and pretend as if they didn’t exist,” he said.
