Bawumia visits Adum Fire victims, calls for completion of Kejetia market

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president, visited the scene of the terrible fire at Adum in Kumasi last Friday and offered assistance to the traders who lost their businesses to the fire.

Many businessmen were left in a state of distress after the fire, which broke out in the early hours of March 21, burned dozens of stores and merchandise valued at millions of Ghanaian cedis.

During his visit, Dr. Bawumia spoke with impacted traders, some of whom sobbed as they recounted how hours of labor had been wiped. They made a request for help in order to rebuild their businesses.

Dr. Bawumia responded by expressing his condolences and asking for patience while the Ghana National Fire Service investigates the fire’s cause and works to stop future occurrences of the same kind in the future.

“We have to wait on the investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service and then we can determine the cause of the fire so that next time we can prevent it,” he stated.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia urged the government to move quickly to finish the Kejetia Central Market Phase II project, which he claimed was close to 80% finished when the NPP left office.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia applauded the firefighters’ efforts in fighting the fire, pointing out that their prompt action stopped additional damage.

“I also want to appeal to the government to complete Phase II of the Kejetia Central Market, which was about 80% complete at the time we left office. We believe that when it is completed it is going to the traders here.

“I want to commend the efforts of the fire service personnel. They have done their best to contain the fire. I heard about two fire personnel who have been admitted to the hospital, we wish them speedy recovery,” he stated.

Alongside the former vice president were party leaders and Bernard Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) regional chairman.
