Awulae Blay IX Champions Cultural Heritage and Environmental Stewardship at Ellembelle Kundum Festival

The Paramount Chief and Overlord of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, His Royal Majesty Awulae Blay IX, has called on citizens of Ellembelle and Nzemaland to uphold their cultural values and protect the environment as a legacy for future generations.

Delivering his first Kundum Festival address since his enstoolment, Awulae Blay IX expressed gratitude to God and the people of Ellembelle for their unwavering support, unity, and cooperation. He described festivals as sacred periods for thanksgiving, renewal of community bonds, and mobilization of resources for development.

This year’s Kundum celebration was held under the theme, “Preserving Our Heritage, Protecting Our Environment – United in Peace for Sustainable Development.” The theme, according to Awulae Blay IX, serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility between humans and nature in ensuring a sustainable and peaceful society.

“Our heritage defines who we are — our language, our traditions, and our respect for elders,” he said. “To preserve it means safeguarding the rivers, forests, and lands that sustain us.”

The Paramount Chief lamented the destruction of farmlands and rivers due to illegal mining, warning that the community’s prosperity cannot be built on environmental ruin. He reaffirmed his commitment to defending the land and promoting responsible use of natural resources.

Awulae Blay IX also commended Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Acting Minister for Environment, for his leadership and dedication to restoring environmental integrity in the Nzema area.

“His appointment is not by accident,” the Chief noted. “It is a divine selection to help Ellembelle and NzemaMaanle win the fight against galamsey.”

The 2025 Ellembelle Kundum Festival drew together chiefs, clergy, political leaders, and residents in celebration of unity, peace, and cultural pride, marking a renewed commitment to both heritage preservation and sustainable development.
