Annor Walker reveals how he discovered Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare

Former Black Galaxies coach Annor Walker has shared the inspiring story of how he discovered Benjamin Asare, the talented goalkeeper who has become the Black Stars’ first choice.

Walker, who previously coached Great Olympics, recalled his first encounter with Asare during his time at Sporting Mirren.

In an exclusive interview with Takoradi-based Oil City Radio 95.9, Walker recounted his first encounter with Asare during his time at Sporting Mirren. It was an encounter that would change the course of Asare’s football career forever.

“I saw Asare when he was at Sporting Mirren, and as a coach, I got to know that he’s a goalkeeper who has the potential when it comes to goalkeeping,” Walker explained.

“So, I told him to join me at Great Olympics.”

Despite the challenges that lay ahead, Walker remained committed to supporting Asare’s development. He recalled the financial struggles the team faced, but his dedication to Asare’s growth never wavered.

“When he came, there were financial challenges, but I told him I will support him,” Walker said. “Sometimes, I had to give him transportation after the training session.”

Asare’s time at Great Olympics proved to be a turning point in his career.

Under Walker’s guidance, he excelled, showcasing his exceptional goalkeeping skills. His impressive performances caught the attention of Accra Hearts of Oak, who eventually signed him.

Benjamin Asare’s remarkable rise to prominence continued unabated, as he earned his maiden call-up to the Black Stars.

He made an unforgettable debut, keeping a clean sheet in Ghana’s resounding 5-0 triumph over Chad, and followed it up with another impressive display in the team’s victory over Madagascar

Following his impressive performances, head coach Otto Addo has handed Benjamin Asare a huge vote of confidence, confirming him as the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper.

Asare will now be expected to guard the posts when Ghana takes on Chad and Mali in the next round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.
