Keesben Sports journalist Andy Kerm has hit back at Aduana FC Chief Executive Officer Collins Atta Poku over his decision to praise the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following the government’s GHC1 million financial support for each Ghana Premier League club.

The government’s intervention is designed to ease the financial burden on clubs ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, with teams expected to benefit from the funding as they prepare for another demanding campaign.

Atta Poku had commended the GFA for the financial package, but Andy Kerm believes the credit should instead be directed to the government, which is providing the funds.

Addressing the Aduana FC CEO, Kerm said: “Your praise for the GFA about the GHC1m to the Premier League clubs should have gone to the Government because it’s the Government that’s paying the money.”

Andy Kerm’s comments have reignited discussions over the respective roles of the government and the GFA in providing financial assistance to clubs competing in Ghana’s top-flight league.

Although the GFA is responsible for the administration, regulation and development of football in the country, Kerm insists that recognition for the financial commitment should primarily go to the government as the source of the funds.

The GHC1 million allocation is expected to provide a major financial boost to Premier League clubs, many of whom continue to contend with substantial operational costs, including player salaries, recruitment, transportation, training and matchday expenses.

For clubs preparing for the new season, the government’s intervention could offer some much-needed breathing space and enable them to strengthen their preparations for the rigours of top-flight football.

The financial challenges confronting clubs have remained a recurring issue in Ghanaian football, with stakeholders frequently calling for stronger institutional and governmental support to improve the sustainability of the domestic game.

Kerm’s response to Atta Poku has consequently placed the spotlight on the need for clarity over who deserves recognition for the latest financial intervention.

With the new Premier League season fast approaching, clubs will hope the government’s support translates into improved financial stability and ultimately contributes to a more competitive and sustainable domestic league.
