The High Court has granted GH¢2.5 million bail to Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu, one of the six persons sentenced to death for attempting to overthrow the government.
The court said Debrah should produce two sureties to be justified before he can enjoy his temporary freedom while his appeal is heard.
Debrah, a fleet manager, was sentenced together with five others in November 2023 after they were found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason.
The other convicted persons were blacksmith Donya Kafui, also known as Ezor; civilian staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Johannes Zikpi; and three soldiers—WO II Esther Saan Dekuwine, L/Cpl Ali Solomon, and Cpl Sylvester Akanpewon. They were all sentenced to death by hanging.
One of the most well-known treason trials in the country in recent memory is this one. ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli, and Corporal Seidu Abubakar, who were also prosecuted in relation to the purported coup plot, were declared not guilty by the court and released.
Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame prosecuted the case, which began in April 2021. During the trial, thirteen witnesses—seven of whom were military officers—testified.
