Akufo-Addo reminds outgoing appointees of ban on acquisition of govt cars

The President’s Office has reaffirmed the rule that outgoing Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, and other political appointees must purchase official government vehicles at the conclusion of the current administration’s tenure.

The Presidential Office Act, 1993 (Act 463) banned the purchase of government vehicles by Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President and Vice President, and all other political appointees at the end of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term in 2020.

Following the general elections, the president declared in a statement released on Wednesday, December 2024, that this law is still in full force “as we approach the end of the President’s second and final term.”

President AkufoAddo has reaffirmed that his administration will not follow the tradition of previous administrations, which let appointees to purchase one official saloon car through valuation by the State Transport Company Ltd.

“No official vehicle shall be acquired by any appointee of the current administration as the term concludes,” the statement said.

All Ministers of State, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President and Vice President, and other political appointees, including those holding Chairperson or Member positions on Statutory Boards and Corporations, must adhere strictly to this directive, it further stated for clarity.

These appointees have until Friday, January 3, 2025, to return all government cars to the Chief Director of the appropriate Ministries.

“This directive underscores the President’s commitment to accountability and the responsible management of state resources. The Office of the President anticipates the cooperation of all appointees in adhering to this important measure,” the statement said.
