Frank Agyekum, the spokesperson for former President John Agyekum Kufuor, claims that President Akufo-Addo bears some of the burden for the party’s defeat in the general elections of 2024.
The New Patriotic Party lost by more than 1.6 million votes to the National Democratic Congress.
During an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr. Agyekum stated that many supporters left the party due to public dissatisfaction and the arrogance of some of its members.
He added that under President Akufo-Addo’s direction, these problems developed and that one reason for the huge loss at the polls was the imposition of unpopular candidates on constituencies.
“The signs were there, and the narrative shows that things have been falling apart for a long time. We failed to heed the warnings and take corrective actions, and that’s what has led us here.
“The leader always bears the ultimate responsibility—it stops with him. When it’s good, we credit him; when it’s bad, he must share the blame,” he said.
Additionally, Mr. Agyekum criticized the presidential and parliamentary candidates, calling them less than ideal.
“There was arrogance, there was hardship in the system, and it seemed those in power failed to fully recognise the discontent. This disconnect between the leadership and the grassroots likely contributed to the significant defeat.”
