Osman Ayariga, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) deputy youth organiser, has charged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with being uncommitted to the fight against galamsey, or illegal mining.

Ayariga says that the President and his party have personally benefited from these operations.

He made this statement on Saturday on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue.

“I do not see how Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is committed to this fight against galamsey because they have benefitted from this galamsey. Nana Addo himself has benefitted from galamsey through his presidency; his own party bigwigs are engaged in galamsey,” Ayariga stated.

A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, Alfred Thompson, has meanwhile called on Ghanaians to unite in the fight against galamsey.

According to Thompson, President Akufo-Addo shouldn’t be the only one handling the galamsey issue. He said all citizens must take an active role in the struggle.
