Professor Justice Nyigmah Bawole, the dean of the University of Ghana Business School, has highlighted artificial intelligence’s (AI) potential as an effective teaching tool for prospective educators.
Speaking at the Wiawso and Komenda Teacher Training Colleges’ Second Biannual Conference at Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region, he acknowledged that although there are concerns about artificial intelligence (AI), much like there were when computers were first introduced, its integration into higher education is now imperative.
“We must learn how to use AI effectively and guide our students in its appropriate application,” he stated.
Speaking to the media from the sidelines, Professor Bawole went into further detail on the application of AI, characterising it as a helpful resource for professionals, researchers, academics, and students.
But he issued a warning, saying that AI is a machine that processes information depending on what it is fed and is not capable of thinking for itself.
Prof. Bawole congratulated Komenda College and Wiawso College on their recent tertiary-level upgrade, which allows them to operate as universities.
He clarifies that this development is in line with their duties, which include teaching, research, and community service, as well as those of other universities.
“Hosting a conference where tutors can present their work reflects the practices of universities, and I encourage them to continue this initiative,” he noted.
Professor Bawole urged other Ghanaian colleges of education to take part in similar cooperative initiatives, stressing the importance of these actions in developing tutors’ abilities and raising the standard of instruction generally.
The goal of the program was to provide teachers with the skills they need to successfully incorporate digital tools—especially artificial intelligence—into their lesson plans.
