In a jab at former President John Dramani Mahama, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo pointed out that Mahama is still Ghana’s only one-term leader.
On Tuesday, October 29, President Akufo-Addo said during a tour of the Ahafo Region that Mahama’s lack of a second term raises doubts about his legitimacy and political clout and that he shouldn’t brag about being at a higher “level” than others.
This statement comes after Mahama recently declined to debate Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mahama rejected the notion, telling supporters in the Ningo Prampram Constituency of Greater Accra that arguing with Bawumia would simply make the vice president look inferior.
He maintained that since he is not required to discuss policy issues with a vice president, he would prefer to confront Dr. Bawumia.
President Akufo-Addo responded to Mahama’s rejection by arguing that Mahama has no right to assert his superiority over Dr. Bawumia, arguing that his one-term presidency does not elevate him above the Vice President.
President Akufo-Addo remarked that Mahama has “no level” over Bawumia and should not avoid engaging with him on grounds of seniority.
He urged supporters in Ahafo to back Bawumia in the upcoming elections, stressing that his Vice President’s leadership and contributions stand as a testament to his capacity to lead Ghana effectively.
“Mahama says he won’t debate Bawumia because Bawumia is not on his level. Really? He is not his class, but for me, I don’t know what class Mahama has for which reason, he says he won’t debate Bawumia.”
“For me, the only class I know is that since the Fourth Republic, five persons have had the opportunity to be presidents of this country but unfortunately one person couldn’t complete his term and God called him to glory, but the four left, only one person that Ghanaians gave him one term based on his poor performance and that his Mr Mahama. So if he says he has class, it is that class, and he is the only person with that class,” the President said.
