In Parliament, there has been a dramatic change in power, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which was previously the House’s minority caucus, now holding the majority.
This change comes after President Alban Bagbin announced on the House floor on Thursday, October 17, that four parliamentary seats were up for reconsideration.
Former NDC Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu’s petition served as the catalyst for the heated debate in Parliament that resulted in the announcement.
As a result, the Speaker ruled that three seats held by New Patriotic Party (NPP) members and one seat held by an NDC member were vacant.
Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of the NDC, Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah of Fomena, Kojo Asante, the NPP MP for Suhum in the Eastern Region, and Cynthia Morrison of the NPP, who represents Agona West, are among those who were impacted by the decision.
The Speaker further pointed out that the four MPs had no reason to stay in the current parliament after the notice of polling made it clear that they were going independent.
This decision means that the opposition NDC will gain ground in Ghana’s stopped parliament, which had previously given the ruling NPP a small lead as the majority side of the House with the backing of Independent Member of Parliament Andrew Amoako Asiamah.
At present, the NDC is in the majority of the House with 136 parliamentary seats, while the NPP is in control of 135 members.
