Majority stages walkout over Bagbin’s decision to declare four Seats vacant

After Speaker Alban Bagbin approved a motion declaring four parliamentary seats vacant, the Majority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament staged a dramatic walkout on October 17, 2024.

The Speaker’s audacious move has caused tension, and the Majority Caucus has expressed their displeasure.

The majority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, led a walkout of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) members of parliament who were unhappy with the decision.

Before leaving the chamber, the Majority Leader argued with the Speaker of Parliament following his decision.

Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu submitted the motion, arguing that the MPs must resign their parliamentary positions in accordance with the constitutional requirements governing parliamentary membership. The MPs intend to run as independent candidates in the December elections.

Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kojo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central) are the MPs impacted by this decision.

The motion underlines the view that these MPs have essentially given up their party connections and vacated their seats in Parliament by declaring their intention to run as independents.
