H.E John Agyekum Kufuor, the former president of Ghana, has demanded that demonstrators who are accused of committing crimes during the most recent Democracy Hub demonstration in Accra face punishment.

While acknowledging that residents have the right to protest, Kufuor underlined that damaging behaviour, such as assaults on law enforcement personnel and property damage, is unacceptable and should not go unpunished.

The protest has received a lot of attention despite causing major property damage and road congestion.

Kufuor highlighted the significance of holding offenders accountable for their actions—especially those who attacked law enforcement officials during the protests—in an interview with Accra-based Angel FM.

He stressed the need for swift and appropriate action to ensure that while citizens’ rights to protest are protected, unlawful behaviour is addressed in accordance with the law.

“If you attack a police officer or take away their car key, you must face the law or be punished. We can’t let them go scot-free,” he opined.

A unified effort against galamsey is also being pushed by John Agyekum Kufuor, who cites the condition’s catastrophic effects on Ghana’s water resources and people’s welfare.

In order to preserve Ghana’s natural legacy, which includes its forests, waterways, and weather patterns, he stressed the necessity of a multimodal strategy.

“We must find a solution to this menace that affects not only the environment but also the livelihoods of many Ghanaians. We need to work together to find a way to stop the destruction of our natural resources and ensure that our environment is protected for future generations.”
