Galamsey: Organised Labour united, focused on nationwide strike – Mine workers union

The government’s inability to handle the problem of illegal mining, or galamsey, across the nation has prompted the Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) to declare that organised labour is unified in its plans to launch a nationwide strike.

This comes after several people expressed worries about how the strike was coordinated. A group identifying as “Concerned Members of Organised Labour” maintains that although they oppose illegal mining operations, the leadership’s method of announcing the strike was inappropriate.

As a result, the organisation is pleading with the Organised Labour leadership to put off preparations for the nationwide strike and resume talks with the administration.

But the General Secretary of the GMWU, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, told Umaru Sanda Amadu in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday that Organised Labour was not disorganised in its decision.

He noted that though there were dissenting views, Organised Labour is united in its strike decision.

“The only issue probably may be about how we went about the meeting. So let me assure you and let me assure the Ghanaian people that organised labour is not disorganised.”

“We may have some dissenting views, it doesn’t mean that substantively there is any position that deviates from our initial position to ensure that we nip galamsey in the bud,” he stated.
