A case concerning suspected medical malpractice at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, Central Region, has been escalated by the Ministry of Health to the Attorney General’s Department and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

This comes after a Ghana Health Service (GHS) inquiry that revealed grave misbehaviour on the part of some hospital staff members over the death of a patient who was moved to Ojobi and left there till she passed away.

In a statement issued by the Health Ministry on Wednesday, October 2, the GHS investigation concluded that the employees involved failed to act appropriately, contributing to the tragic outcome.

The committee handling the inquiry recommended internal disciplinary sanctions against the staff involved. Nevertheless, given the seriousness of the event and the ensuing death toll, the Ministry of Health has decided to conduct additional enquiries.

The Ministry has asked the Attorney-General for help in identifying the staff members’ guilt and pursuing any additional legal action in order to guarantee complete accountability. The CID has also been notified about the situation so that a criminal investigation can be conducted.

The Ministry underlined its dedication to maintaining the greatest standards in healthcare service and pledged to stop similar unfortunate events from happening again in the future.
