In response to the growing illegal mining issue that has negatively impacted waterways and farmlands across the nation, the Media Coalition Against illegal Mining has urged the government to move quickly.

At a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference President, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, reiterated the pressing necessity for intervention.

Emphasising the corruption that makes the issue worse, he conveyed his profound concern over the participation of certain political people and chiefs in illicit operations.

“The lack of political will has further exacerbated the problem allowing illegal mining to thrive unchecked.”

“We wish to state that Ghanaians can no longer tolerate the lip service of the government of whatever colour in the fight against galamsey and we call for action not tomorrow but now and right from this press conference and all hands must get on board,” he stated.
