The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has demanded that President Akufo-Addo step down, citing the sharp depreciation of the cedi as a major shortcoming of his administration.
At the conclusion of his tour of the Bono East Region, Mr. Mahama spoke to supporters at a campaign rally in Nkwabeng, in the Nkwanta South District. He expressed his extreme dissatisfaction with the way the government is handling the economy.
He underlined that, the cedi’s rapid collapse, highlighting its depreciation from above GH¢15 to one US dollar.
The former President contended that a truly accountable leader would have resigned when the cedi first began its sharp decline. Mr. Mahama drew a comparison between the performance of the current government and his tenure, highlighting the stark differences in inflation rates and the exchange rate and stressing how the economic policies of the current administration have significantly worsened the cost of living for average Ghanaians.
“During the late President Atta Mills’ administration, the exchange rate was GH¢2 to a dollar. When President Akufo-Addo took office, it was GH¢4 to a dollar. Now, after nearly eight years, it has risen to GH¢16 per dollar,” Mahama pointed out.
He also criticised the rising prices of necessities, such as cement, and blamed the government’s mismanagement of the economy for this.
