Rationale for exhibiting the provisional voters register is to correct errors and omissions – EC tells NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been informed by the Electoral Commission (EC) that the intention behind displaying the provisional voters registration was to make necessary adjustments.

The Commission stated that the final voter list would not be printed for the elections until the necessary changes have been completed.

According to it, this has been the norm since 1992.

“The rationale for exhibiting the provisional voters register is to correct errors and omissions. It’s only after all identified issues are corrected that the final register is printed for the elections. This has been the practice since 1992,” the commission posted on its X platform.

This came about in response to the NDC’s request for a forensic audit or parliamentary inquiry of the voter registration.

On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, Dr. Edward Omane-Boamah, the main opposition party’s director of elections and IT, stated that the voter registration is still irreversibly flawed in the absence of a forensic audit or legislative inquiry.

“The Electoral Commission of Ghana refused to release the voters’ register to the NDC on time ahead of the exhibition exercise,” it said.

The voters’ register was made available to the public last week by the Electoral Commission so that voters could verify the information and make any necessary revisions.

The NDC had requested that the voters’ register be made available to them ahead of the operation so that their representatives could compare what was provided to what the Commission was displaying.

Aside from the daily updates provided to the parties throughout the voter registration activity and the subsequent mop up, the entire register was made available to them one day before to the exercise.

With relatively little participation, the exercise ran from August 22 to Tuesday, August 27.

However, “it’s obvious the register has been tampered with deliberately,” according to Dr. Omane Boamah.
