Northern Region Police Secure 40 Convictions in Major Crime Crackdown

The Northern Regional Police Command has achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing battle against crime, securing 40 convictions following a series of targeted operations.

The convictions, which attracted fines ranging from GH¢2,400 to GH¢120,000 and custodial sentences spanning 15 months to 15 years, stem from the work of the Regional Special Operations Team, code-named Red Maria.

Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, revealed that the team has apprehended over 200 suspects through intelligence-driven operations in key hotspots, including Taxi Rank, Aboabo, and Nobisco Forest.

“Operations have resulted in multiple arrests related to drug possession, prostitution, and unlawful assembly,” DCOP Lavoe stated during a media briefing in Tamale on 7 April 2026, outlining the Red Maria team’s achievements since its inception in March.

The Red Maria unit was established to fill the void left by the disbandment of the Black Maria team, with a clear mandate to tackle crimes such as drug trafficking and robbery.

According to DCOP Lavoe, GH¢72,000 has been recovered in fines from the convicted individuals. Of the 40 persons sentenced, 32 paid fines, eight received prison terms, and 31 suspects remain in remand.

He lauded residents for their continued cooperation, urging them to sustain their support in the fight against crime. DCOP Lavoe also highlighted that the police have received commendations from various stakeholders, including traditional authorities, in recognition of their efforts to enhance security in the region.
