REPORTS: Former NPP National Chairman Freddie Blay Arrested Over Alleged Property Destruction

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and ex-Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Freddie Worsemao Blay, has reportedly been arrested by the Ghana Police Service following the execution of a bench warrant issued by the Akropong Circuit Court in connection with an alleged property destruction case.

According to available details, the court issued the warrant after Mr. Blay allegedly failed to honour a summons directing him to appear before the court in relation to the ongoing legal matter.

Police officers executed the warrant on Monday, March 16, 2026, leading to the temporary detention of the seasoned politician to ensure his compliance with the court’s directive and his appearance before the Akropong Circuit Court.

The case is believed to stem from a long-standing land and property dispute in the Eastern Region, where Mr. Blay has been accused of involvement in actions that allegedly resulted in the destruction of property belonging to another party.

Sources indicate that the court resorted to issuing the bench warrant after the former NPP chairman reportedly failed to respond to earlier court directives, prompting judicial authorities to mandate law enforcement officers to secure his attendance before the court.

Freddie Blay, a distinguished lawyer and influential political figure, served as Member of Parliament for the Ellembelle Constituency from 1997 to 2008 under the Convention People’s Party (CPP). He later rose through the ranks of the New Patriotic Party, serving as First Vice Chairman before becoming the party’s National Chairman from 2018 to 2022.

Over the years, Mr. Blay has remained a prominent voice within Ghana’s political space, playing a significant role in shaping the NPP’s internal structures and national political discourse.

News of his arrest has quickly sparked widespread attention across Ghana’s political landscape, with many observers closely monitoring developments surrounding the case.

As of the time of this report, it remains unclear whether Mr. Blay has been granted bail or when he is expected to formally appear before the Akropong Circuit Court to respond to the allegations.

Further updates are expected as proceedings in the matter unfold.
